Healthworks raises a cup for breast cancer

(29 October, 2009)

Healthworks are backing ‘Wear it Pink’ day by raising a cup of coffee and encouraging other people to do the same by attending their fundraising coffee morning on Friday 30 October, 2009 between 9.30am and 12.30pm at the Healthworks centre in Paradise Lane, Easington Colliery.

Local people, family and friends are being invited to come along and join in raising awareness of breast cancer.

The coffee morning which is run on behalf of ‘Wear it Pink’ Breast Cancer Campaign, will be a fun morning and will include:

·        A cake stall

·        Tombola

·        Fruit basket raffle.

Staff at Healthworks are being asked to wear pink and make a donation to the cause.

NHS County Durham and Darlington’s health improvement service practitioner, Carole Moore, will be attending the event offering advice and information for anyone who has concerns either about breast cancer or breast screening or other related issues.

Fiona McQuiston, Information Manager for the Cancer Information and Support Service said:  "Fund raising events such as Wear it Pink day make important contribution to raising women's awareness of the importance of being aware of the early symptoms of breast cancer, self examination and screening.  Local women who have any queries about breast cancer can access valuable information from the local Cancer Information and Support Centre based in Peterlee Town Centre above Boots chemist.

“Breast cancer is a complex disease that can affect both men and women with around 46,000 woman in the UK diagnosed with the disease each year. Breast cancer can affect women at any age and one in nine women will get breast cancer at some time in their life. In addition, approximately 300 men in the UK get breast cancer each year, although these are more likely to be men who are over 50.”

Fiona Maher, Healthworks co-ordinator, added:  “We are hoping for a good turnout on the day and to raise money for this vital cause as well as helping people access the right support and information at what can be a very difficult time.

“Last year we managed to raise over £140 and this year we hope to raise even more."
